Goldcoast
Very, very interesting.

I am wondering if the Gold Coast is comparable to the English view of Eastbourne. When we were thinking of moving to Eastbourne, we were warned off by everyone (none of whom had lived here), all stating that it was a retirement village, and that with a young family we wouldn't fit in. When we got here, we found the dermographics just 1/2 a mile inland inland, to be very young family orientated, with just the seafront full of retirees. I do feel that this is probably the best place in England to live, it has beauty, peacefulness, amenities, decent colleges/university campuses etc. But what it doesn't have is a) weather, b) leisure activities and c) (and most important!) it doesn't have work. My husband was an IT consultant when we moved here, and was made redundant twice in three months when that bubble burst, hence why the retraining. Does the Gold Coast have work for Air conditioning mechanics? Can you recommend any vacancy websites in the area?

Definately worth checking out when I visit.

Thanks for the info Smile

What abt *b*ankers ?

About 60% of all university students seem to be studying economics, so I can't see that we'll be short of bankers for many years.

Very short of nurses, teachers, scientists, tradesmen-not bankers.

Yes, Gold Coast should be good for aircon techs, and I used to know someone who had such a business there. But....not my cuppa!

But lots of English and retirees go there - I'm not sure what that says.

surrounded by British
I don't much fancy the idea being part of little England by the sea - I could do that here! I am more an integration person, when in Rome etc. The idea of moving to other side of the world and living in an expat community fills me with dread. There's more to life than just being British Smile

(and beside you miss out on so much being blinkered)

That is bollocks! Queensland does not have THE worst education system in the country, It's excellent, I should know, I come from there!.

Anyway, you may like to consider Brisbane to live. It is a very clean, liveable, cheap city,is very family orientated and has lots of work. The weather is just fantastic and it is not as hot as people tell others it is, the average summer day would be about 30 degrees and a winter day about anywhere from 8-20 degrees.

I personally, wouldn't want to live on the Gold Coast. Too busy and very rubbishy, for a city in Queensland, Brisbane is the way to go!

Love it the best!

I don't think we have anyone active on this board from Queensland

I'm from Qld. Here's some info I can think of that may be useful:

- weather is great. No snow, guaranteed
- what kind of level of schooling are your children facing? In terms of university study, I think the University of Qld would be easier to get into compared to some of its other counterparts in Sydney (eg - Uni of Sydney or NSW) or Melbourne (Monash or melbourne U).
- lifestyle is not as active as the above two other major cities - we are much quieter, so I have heard from friends who study in Melbourne and Sydeny
- and I believe our housing to be still relatively cheaper.
