Australia Bound, but looking for guidance :)

Hi All.
I am looking to emigrate to Australia with my family when I complete my degree. Our main reason for going is the level of education and lifestyle we can offer our children. We are completely open as to where we go, and are looking for some feedback from resident Aussies.
My husband is an Air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic, and will be the main breadwinner, so an area where he can earn a decent wage / have consistent work is a priority. Another main priority will be decent schools for the kids. We don't want to live in the city, as 30 years in London is enough for anyone), and want a more suburban life near the coast (and as most of Autralian civilization is near the coast, it's a pretty safe bet!).
I am travelling out in September to Brisbane and Melbourne on a fact finding trip, just to get a feel for the place, and would be interested in meeting up to discuss.
In the meantime, I would appreciate all ideas, experiences, tips for the process and recommendations on where best to start life with a young family.
Many thanks all
Claire Wink

G'day Claire, and welcome to A2K!

I'd guess the starting point would be checking with Australian immigration, through Australia House, to see if you fill the requirements for migrants, i.e., have sufficient points to be accepted.

As to where to go - well - I've lived in Sydney all my life, so can't comment on anywhere else.

Air-con / refrigeration would seem to call for warmer climates, so Brisbane / Gold Coast / Sunshine Coast would be a good bet. I used to know someone who made a good living with his own company in this area on the Gold Coast. I wouldn't chose to live there myself. I can't comment on good schools - good schools and not-so-good ones are everywhere. You just need to do your research.

I don't think we have anyone active on this board from Queensland (now that Adrian has mnoved back to Sydney), but we do have a Melbourne member. I'll send her a pm and suggest she look in here.

Good Luck

Hello Claire & welcome to A2K! Very Happy

I'm "the Melbourne member" that margo mentioned. I could tell you a lot about Melbourne, but you've said you're not interested in living in a big city again. So I could give you some info. on regional cities & country areas, if you're interested. It's hard to know where to start! Laughing
Feel free to ask me anything, & if I can, I'll oblige. Very Happy

Thank's Margo, but there are some reliability problems. I have consistently forgotten to get that poem to you (4 days online with 4 complete misses - slack or what?). Must say I did have a lot of fun with a certain bunny tho......

Coffee costs a pretty penny, but Sydney's a world-class bargain for hamburger-eating renters
Quote:
Believe it or not, it is cheaper to rent a luxury two-bedroom apartment in Sydney than in Warsaw, and a cup of coffee here is almost the same as in Rome - but when it comes to world-class value, look no further than our hamburgers.

At $6.59 for the average hamburger fast-food meal, Sydney is on a par with Prague and Zagreb, $3 cheaper than London, and positively trumps Athens, where a meal comes in at a whopping $12.99, according to the results of a survey by a human resources company into the cost of living in 144 cities around the world.

Not bad in a year when Sydney has shot up 47 places to 20th on a list of the world's most expensive cities to live - but only if you are an expatriate businessman paying in US dollars.

Australasian cities appear more "expensive" than they actually are because the list is based on the cost in US dollars of relocating business executives from New York.

In the past year, gains made by the Australian and New Zealand dollars at the expense of the greenback have pushed up the cost of living, argues Mercer, the company behind the report.

The report looked into the cost of 200 items including household goods, utilities, clothing and entertainment.

The principal of the company, Rob Knox, said: "Cities in Australia and New Zealand have risen more in the rankings this year due to the significant appreciation of local currencies against the US dollar."

Melbourne rose 44 places to 67th and Brisbane 34 places to 87th position.

Mercer's global snapshot was taken in March, days after the Australian dollar reached a trading peak of 79 US cents, US19c higher than when the last survey was conducted in March 2003.

Today the Australian dollar stands at US69c.

In fact, Sydney compares favourably in cost to many other world cities.

The $2.50 average a Sydneysider pays to get on a bus or train is the same as the cost in New York and $1.40 cheaper than in Berlin and London.

A cup of coffee inclusive of service will cost roughly the same as in Paris, Rome or Amsterdam ($3.97), but more than twice as much as in Buenos Aires ($1.60).

Compared with London and Beijing, where the monthly rental of a luxury two-bedroom unfurnished apartment is $5245, renting in Sydney is relatively cheap at $2220 - in fact, $300 cheaper than in Warsaw.

Welcome to A2K - although you've been here since February - I haven't come across you before.

Where are you talking about?

I could use some warmth right now - 5.45am in chilly Sydney winter! Days are lovely, though Smile

Ignore Mr Stillwater - he's the class clown.

Makes you wonder, though - Stilly and I are both products of Sydney Question

A few reasons NOT to emigrate to Australia:

Fierce Snake or Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus ), Australia. The most toxic venom of any snake. Maximum yield recorded (for one bite) is 110mg. That would probably be enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000 mice. These rare snakes are virtually unknown in collections outside of Australia.

Taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus ), Australia. The venom delivered in a single Taipan bite is enough to kill up to 12,000 guinea pigs.

Tiger Snake (Notechis scutatus ), Australia. The Tiger snake is a very aggressive snake that kills more people in Australia that any other snake on that continent.

Death Adder (Acanthophis antarcticus ), Australia and New Guinea. The Death Adder looks like a viper but is more closely related to the cobras. A dosage of 10mg of Death Adder venom is enough to kill a human. A good sized Death Adder can deliver up to 180mg in a single bite.

Funnel-web spiders: http://www.amonline.net.au/factsheets/funnelweb.htm

Killer jellyfish: http://lama.kcc.hawaii.edu/praise/news/eh201.html

Sharks

Bunnies

You may like to consider Adelaide - a nice city and the home of "da bunny" - A2K's (almost) top poster. It's near the water, but away from the humidity of Queensland, and the odd weather of Melbourne. And it's not as isolated as Perth.

Ignore Cav's posts - he's just a bitter Canuck chef. Chances of seeing any of these things are extremely small.

Hi,
Saw your message about you emigrating to Oz
We're doing the same shortly. (currently live in sunny Kent!). We're just waiting for our house to sell then we're off.
Can highly recommend Noosa (about 1 and a half hours drive north of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast. Property is a bit more expensive there but Wow, what a place. Scenery to die for, houses to die for and really in the right place to get to Brisbane and a few other major places Mooloolaba...lovely, and Maroochydor... great for shopping. The river is absolutely beautiful if you're not into the sea/ beach. Very elite area with excellent schools etc., My kids are 9, 10 and 21 years old, just a bit worried there will be enough for my eldest daughter of 21 (night Life).
The only thing that puts me off Noosa is the weather is sub tropical, went in October last year and it was suffocating, sweat dripping constantly, so we are going to visit Perth to see what that's like (much drier heat apparently and much cheaper properties). Problem is with Perth, you're very cut off from the rest of Australia and there's alot of Brits there. I don't know about you but I'm trying to escape the Brits not join them!!.

Don't know what visa you've got but you should do well if your husband is an air conditioning engineer as it is a job in demand. My husband's a plumber - top points but we missed it on age being over the hill at 40!! still we've got a business visa so we're hoping to make a go of it that way.
We would be really interested to hear from you and hear how you progress. Good luck anyway.
(Bye the way we thought the Gold Coast was the pits although alot of people rave about it, all high rise and touristy).
