I have heard of programs where you can put anything or everything private or whatever into some kind of safe thats password protected and sits on your desktop, what would something like this be called?
What do you want to put in it?
There are some that store paswords, I'm not aware of anything that can safely store everything in a manner that justifies its existence.
Lemme explain. Basically, it's easy to password protect stuff and you don't usually need special programs. But those programs usually take it a step further to justify their existence, they encrypt or hash your data.
I use one for password management but not for everything (e.g. images, files etc).
Ok, so how is it that i can pasword protect things?
Well you can password protect your whole computer, individual accounts....
But I suspect that won't work for you (shared pc?).
You can buy software to password protect windows folders and this is probably the closest to what you seem to be describing.
