I've almost completed all of the steps from "Spyware, Browser Hijacks, or other Yuckware? Check here 1st". When I try to defragment my hard disc, the message comes up saying "C:\HIBERFIL.SYS" is making it so I can't do it. Is this a Virus? How do I remove it or fix is?
I run on Windows XP... That's all I can tell people. I don't know too much about this stuff.
"HIBERFIL.SYS" is part of the Hibernation feature. To disable it, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Power Options
Click the "Hibernate" tab, then remove the checkmark from the "Enable hibernate support" box, then click "Apply"
Also, be sure that all of the Power Management functions on the "Power Schemes" tab are set to "Never" (the "Presentation" preset from the main dropdown should give you this, or you can select "Never" from the dropdownbox for each item ... if you do this, "Save As" and name the new powerscheme something like "defrag"" that will be easy for you to remember), then click "Apply" again, then click "OK" Also, be sure that you have disabled your screensaver. Some antivirus apps can interfere with DEFRAG, too, so, as long as you aren't online at the time, and remember to reactivate it, temporarily disable your antivirus. Other tracking , scheduling, or scanning apps can interfere as well ... its best to defrag with as little else running as you can get away with. I usually defrag in safe mode. When you've completed the defrag, you can restore the settings to whatever you like.
Thank you very much. You guys (and/or gals) are the shizzy.
"the shizzy", huh? I have no clue ... guess I gotta start gettin' out more. Anyhow, yer weccum.
