I went through the entire process in the link you provided. My computer is still not working right. The little hourglass icon shows up whenever I run any program, and it's showing up every 5 seconds or so while I'm typing this message. Everything is really slow.

There is one other thing. Whenever I go to the Add/Remove programs area, there's a file that says "Windows Millenium Edition Q823559 Update." I don't think that was there before I started having problems.

There's a number of experts on the site who are currently swamped with problems like this. I'm sure they'll get to this one eventually.

Windows Millenium Edition Q823559 Update would have been from Windows update. Have you been there recently?

Yes, I went to the MS site yesterday for updates, as per the instructions in the link you gave me. I just wasn't aware that the update is a program in and of itself.
