This guy reminds me of James Taylor in a way.

They are reopening the Buddy Holly plane wreck investigation. It is an effort to exonerate the pilot, who was given the blame.

@edgarblythe,
Hello peeps. Saw a very good documentary about James Brown on our TVs recently. I recorded it, it being long, and I watched it in chunks.

Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses, had the power to borrow money, purchase land, levy dues from ship owners, and to construct lighthouses. They were appointed, and clearly many saw it as an opportunity to feather their own nests.

Good WARM morning from our Florida radio station.
edgar/Mark, Thanks for the explanation concerning Buddy Holly and the wreck of his airplane. (the day the music died, too)
Old Blue Eyes' version of the "witch" was great.

McTag, Welcome back and I love James Brown's songs, especially I Feel Good. Need that one today.

As you know, Pullman, I have become fascinated with your Punch covers. The Light House explanation reminded me of "The Ghost in the Lighthouse." Need to check that out, because it was here in Florida.

Three songs for the daylight here:

First, a birthday guy singing with his
buddies:

The day guy is Duff.

Now Al Jolson:

Now, Mahattan Transfer doing a cover of The Mills Brothers.

Posting Friday's entry early because I may not have much time to post tomorrow. Another political cartoon which shows the conservative nature of Punch. They were also notoriously anti Irish.

Quote:
'The Knight and his Companion', 1887. The Knight in this cartoon is Prince Bismarck of Germany. A General Election had been held in Germany in mid-February 1887 and resulted in a healthy majority for Bismarck. However, the Socialists made great gains, reflecting the growth of socialist support, especially in Berlin where they gained some 40% of the vote.

This is the original, note that although Death has gone, the Devil is replaced by Socialism.

Quote:
Knight, Death and the Devil (German: Ritter, Tod und Teufel) is a large 1513 engraving, one of the three "master prints" of the German artist Albrecht Dürer. The print portrays an armoured knight, accompanied by his faithful dog, riding through a narrow gorge flanked by a goat-headed devil and the figure of death riding a pale horse. Death holds an hourglass to remind the knight of the shortness of his life. The rider moves through the scene ignoring or looking away from the creatures lurking around him. He appears to be almost contemptuous of the threats, and as such is often seen to be a symbol of courage.

Death, the Devil, and the landscape are all rendered in a bleakly northern manner. The surrounding characters are threatening to the knight, who is seemingly protected by the literal and figurative armor of his faith. It is believed by some art historians to be linked with publications of the Dutch humanist and theologian Erasmus's Enchiridion militis Christiani (Handbook of a Christian soldier). The engraving draws from Psalm 23; "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil". Knight, Death and the Devil is dated and signed by the artist; the bottom left of the tablet is scribed "S. (=Salus/in the year of grace) 1513."

Now, our poem for today by Michelangelo. Today is his birthday.

AVISHED by all that to the eyes is fair,
Yet hungry for the joys that truly bless,
My soul can find no stair
To mount to heaven, save earth's loveliness.
For from the stars above
Descends a glorious light
That lifts our longing to their highest height
And bears the name of love.
Nor is there aught can move
A gentle heart, or purge or make it wise,
But beauty and the starlight of her eyes.
