For a guy that was at the forefront of popularising Disco as the urban sound of the '70's, not many people are aware of Nile Rodgers' humble rural beginnings; he was born and raised on a farm in Montana. Long before hitting paydirt with his band, Chic, he started the gimmicky tradition of holding a raffle at his shows. Prizes were appropriate for the farmer-types that attended those early gigs; diesel vouchers, perhaps a hoe or shovel, even occasionally a chicken. As his fame spread, the prizes became more substantial and he continued with the practise even when Chic were filling stadiums. Of course, a signature song was needed hence the worldwide smash: Free cow (and a sheep, and a sheep)
