@Olivier5,
"Armstrong" was outstanding! And what a brass section!

Hope you like this one.

@George,
I did like Dailey. Reminds me of Melecamp a bit.

Now for an Isreali ode to Paris, of sort (ok not a huge piece of music but it's funny):

@George,
Ah, my Christian friend, up early today because I have to
go to the bank again. No, not the bank of Loch Lomand, (miss McTag)

A couple of golden oldies now:

Thanks for that "blast from the past".
My grandfather fought in France in World War I.

@George,
The song does sound Arabic but it's in fact linked to the Judeo-Arab Al Andalus music tradition. This kind of things:

Yes, but I've never been there. Funny song. Who was this guy, Big Bopper? A comical singer?

@Letty,
"Paddy's Lament" is quite a song. I'd never heard it before.

My great-grandfather was of Irish descent. He came to the U.S. from Nova
Scotia as a teenager. He fought with the 26th Massachusetts Volunteer
Infantry, probably having lied about his age.

@Olivier5,
The Big Bopper was a "rockabilly" singer of the fifties.

He died in the same airplane crash as Buddy Holly and Richie Valens ("The
Day the Music Died").

@George,
You never heard of Enrico Macias? Oh vey!

In short, his family is Sepharadic, from Constantine. His father and uncle were masters of the Judeo-Arabic Andalous tradition and young Enrico studied it with them. He came to France as a young adult, after Algerian independence from France. He soon became a total star in France, in Israel of course, and more surprisingly in the francophone Arab world (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt...) with his songs mixing oriental tunes and cheesy French lyrics.

Enrico Macias - Enfants de tous pays
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5InZ-yg-E4

When he became old, he returned to the Al Andalous tradition, and surprised many of his fans by proving he could play some pretty elaborate ancient music and sing it in Arabic:

@Letty,
I can imagine "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" being sung by friends
and families longing for the safe return of those soldiers.

Here's another unusual cover
