New edition of Punch today. Some news from America, like a lot of news stories I think it was included just to make puns.

Quote:
THE American House of Representatives has passed a Bill for the suppression of Polygamy in Utah, at the same time abolishing Woman Suffrage in that land, where ladies are supposed to be in the majority. This seems to suggest that it is the ladies themselves who support the system. Mormons and strong-minded females are already prophesising that the Bill will be an Utah failure!

Groan.

@edgarblythe,
So your trip wasn't an Utah failure. (I'm so sorry.)

@izzythepush,
It was a trip of a lifetime. I was hitch hiking from San Francisco to Kansas City. To view so much wonderful scenery and go by Salt Lake was fabulous, but the topper was to have Salt Lake City burst into view. I would love to visit again as a bona fide tourist one day.

This version of La Bamba begins slowly, in English, then goes to Spanish and dancing.

Joe Turner
Big Joe Turner (born Joseph Vernon Turner Jr., May 18, 1911 – November 24, 1985)[1] was an American blues shouter from Kansas City, Missouri, United States.[2] According to the songwriter Doc Pomus, "Rock and roll would have never happened without him."[2] While he had his greatest fame during the 1950s with his rock and roll recordings, particularly "Shake, Rattle and Roll", Turner's career as a performer endured from the 1920s into the 1980s.[2] Turner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, with the Hall lauding him as "the brawny voiced 'Boss of the Blues'".[2]

First, two poem by Lord Byron whose birthday is today.

Some things do change. Now the heavy industry has moved out, London is not at all foggy.

Quote:
Seasonable Song.
Foggy would a-brewing go,
Whether November had hooked it or no,
With its rolling peasoupy pall of asphyxia,
Heigho! says the British Public!

Two inspirations first, Morgan. I remember: "a froggie would a courtin' go, hi ho said Raleigh, wither his mither would have it or no with a roly poly grumly and gritty hi ho said Anthony Raleigh." (think that's right pullman)

Now from Latin George's Sir Elton John.

@edgarblythe,
Mark, That was perfect for "the velvet fog". Here's another by "old blue eyes"

Incidentally, y'all, it was a Japanese guy from California who told me that funky meant "tacky on purpose". That's what I was being with all those remarks.

@edgarblythe,
Mark, I got poison ivy when I was young. I've forgotten what my Mamma used to treat it, however.

Good one by the Coasters.

Today is Randolph Scott's birthdday, but I was first introduced to him by The Statler Brothers. My older sister is the one who taught me about them. Just a memory jog:

The Statler Brothers were an American country music, gospel, and backing vocal group for Johnny Cash. The quartet was founded in 1955 in Staunton, Virginia.

Now, a tribute to that cowboy:

Why is cowboy supposed to be a bad name?

When I first heard Joan Baez sing this, I thought it strange that she would do a sympathetic song about the downfall of the Confederacy, but the song is actually about the human suffering caused by war.
