@nimh,
Man, this band would have been so huge in northern California 15 years ago.

Prolly still would be, for that matter.

Course, eastern european and gypsy and klezmer mesh seamlessly with ska, as has benefitted now-huge western acts like gogol bordello (personal fave, except for the last album) and netisyahu and, more obliquely, the likes of devotchka...

Somewhere my mad racist Hungarian ex-uncle Janos is bobbing his balding gray head, rotting belly full of cheap sweet red wine...

@patiodog,
ex-uncle? how does that happen?

love them all - gb, devotchka. also auktyon, introduced to me by nimh. And a Czech band Ahmed ma hlad (Ahmed is hungry)...concoction of Eastern/Southern European themes and variations.
And good night.

Okay, in the actual spirit of the thread:

All else being equal, food cooked out-of-doors is at least 54% better than food cooked inside.

In reality, participants are actually 700% more likely to be so drunk by the time that food is served that they would eat BBQed flip flops/thongs with enough ketchup/tomato sauce.

@Mr Stillwater,
I live in a cold and alcoholic climate. I am equally likely to be drunk when food is prepared, whether in or out of the asylum.

@patiodog,
I rarely prepare food without being drunk. It makes for a certain... range of possibilities for the dishes. The only damn problem is you can never recreate a successful dish or pass on handy kitchen hints to others. For instance, my pumpkin soup recipe is legendary. Trouble is, I can't remember half the ingredients anymore - only the fights I got into with my ex. You reckon Gordon Ramsey has this problem?

@Mr Stillwater,
I reckon he's got a sober and effete little assistant to scrabble down (and, where necessary, omit) the various dashes, pinches, pokes, and squirts that define the craft.

Me, I only cook with intuition and nose, and never attempt to recreate a damn thing. Well, the meat rubs have become pretty reliably repetitive, but that's mainly attributable to a limited pantry.

My Kitchen Be-yitch is responsible for keeping the glass filled and chasing the dog back out onto the patio.

Tell all your friends at A2K more about these 'meat-rubs' of yours. Any connection with the sudden onset of poor-vision and hirsute palms???

@Mr Stillwater,
Myths, myths, I swear it. My eyes are keen, my palms glabrous.

But I make my own sauce! Bada-BING!

I'll be here all week, folks. Try the goulash.

@patiodog,
Nothing I cook comes out the same way twice.

It's one of the pleasures of life.

@Mr Stillwater,
I am an unrepentant alcoholic.

I dug this up to type something else, but I can't remember what it was.

@patiodog,
Really, what was it? Was it something about soup? I'm eating soup. Soup can be good. Yes, maybe it was soup related...

Maybe it was malaria. I was just thinking about malaria. Hmmm....

Oh, **** it. Nimh, you're smart: what random observation motivated me to dig up this thread?

@patiodog,
Turd casts long shadow on side
Walk neglected, un-
Taken care of
Frozen in winter
Preserved for time
When free time
Allows tidiness
And care

Simple guitar
Two chords
Picked arpeggios
Oversung by name
Sake of mother
And drop-dead sexy south
African woman
Met last week

Half a cigarette
Every half year
Reminiscent of vices left
Voices left
With dark hair
And great care
Of future plans

Burnt tobacco hint
On finger tips
Tips memory back
Car rides, old Dodge dashboard
Wind wings open
Wafting Salem smoke
Mixed with valley tule
Fog and safe ride from Bakers
Field four feet tall

Drizzle slick
Tires spun
Games won
Moons shot
Fly wicks
Flies spun
Dross left,

to freeze,
and dry.

@dlowan,
Du, who? (Had a half-cigarette, which is a rare occurrence these days -- and, as son of smoker, fraught with smemory. So.)

I'm bored.

Had a student watching in surgery for a while today. "Your hands move so fast."

Well, duh. I do this fifty times a week. I'm not THINKING about it.

It's the worst time of year in Wisconsin, and everyone's tired and turned to hermitage. Bored, bored, bored.
