...
Without the ego, we wouldn't be able to make choices.
This question is a bit premature. First we must establish--
Is the ego necessary?
You want mine? he he he....
"Choice by intellect" sounds good, but it's far from the truth. Or haven't you noticed yet? LOL
If truth be told.....my ego is so confused, I'm not sure how I survived with this brain all this time.
C.I., your ego is not confused. There is just confusion--no ego.
Actually, the ego is a subjective fact, not an objective fact. But going further: subjectivity is an objective fact in nature.
Well...what is "ego"?
I thought it meant individual identity.
The intellect has no loyalty, it just observes and draws conclusions based on all the data accumulated...of course human intellect is very much affected by "ego"..
I think individual identity is necessary because that is how we perceive human beings...again, in some spiritual thinking, all humanity is really one Body...but our perception is that each of us is distinct and separate...Peculiar even..
I think each Peculiar Person has a particular bit of Reality to "make known"...by living...and dying...
The Super Ego to me would be recognition that all the Egos are related to each other and could be related in an appreciative way, rather than an aggressive way....it must be one or the other, no "ego" can stand alone...
The intellect is the ego. If choices weren't based on the ego, we would all make the same choices, obviously.
I think before progressing any further we need to define the subject namely the term ego. By ego I thought the following was meant:
1. An exaggerated sense of self-importance; conceit.
2. Appropriate pride in oneself; self-esteem.
Ego could also mean;
The self, especially as distinct from the world and other selves.
OR
In psychoanalysis, the division of the psyche that is conscious, most immediately controls thought and behavior, and is most in touch with external reality.
Rufio, do you remember the threads in which you, Craven, Joe, Fresco, Tywvel and I debated the nature of the ego, dualism, the self, etc. ad nauseum? Perhaps you could guide these gentlemen to them, and save a lot of repetition.
Oy. There were so many. I can't remember what they were called anymore.
