This is one of those bits of advice one cannot fully comprehend until several years after graduation.

This is a joke. The standard saying is "Choose a major you love (or a job you love) and you'll never work a day in your life" meaning that doing something you love is not "work". The joke part is changing the meaning by adding "because that field probably isn't hiring".
