Actuallu, "about blank" is normal. If you want to change it simply go into tools then hit internet options. You will see a place to change your home page. I don't know what all those dos commands you gave us were all about.

This is a difficult to remove CoolWebSearch infection. Whatever you do, don't run CWShredder yet. Also, after you follow these instructions, DO NOT reboot your p.c. until I tell you as the infection changes it's name every time and we need to find that to kill it:

Step 1. Download this file from
http://downloads.subratam.org/dllfix.exe
or
http://tools.zerosrealm.com/dllfix.exe
and save it in a place you like.

Step 2. The file when downloaded will be dllfix.exe.

Step 3. Double-Click or Open the self-extracting file. It will ask for installation and change location. Please Keep it in BOOT drive and not in any place else. Preferably in Desktop.

Step 4. Navigate to the folder with the contents of the file. You will see there are two more folders inside and two BAT files.

Step 5. Run start.bat and you should get a screen with 4 options.

Run the Option 1. for report.

Step 6. Once the search is complete a ".txt" file should pop up with the name "Output.txt".

Copy and paste that file back to this thread.

This is the 'locked' file we need to delete before CoolWebShredder will work:

Locked or 'Suspect' file(s) found...
\\?\C:\WINDOWS\System32\KBDGJ.DLL +++ File read error
\\?\C:\WINDOWS\System32\KBDGJ.DLL +++ File read error

If you have rebooted since posting there's every chance the file will have morphed. If so you'll have to run step 1 again and identify the bad .dll then follow these instructions:

Run the start.bat again. Run option 2 and choose option 1.

You will see a flashing red cursor. Type in kbdgj.dll then hit enter and let it do it's thing, it should reboot, scan then fix the bad .dll.

Reboot again and post a new start.bat report

Nicfun, "About:Blank" is a "Normal" setting ... unless its been hijacked, which is exceedingly common. CWShredder is a great tool, and frequently updated (current version is 1.58.0.0, released June 3 '04), but its not a miracle pill. If it doesn't know about a new variant, it won't fix it.

Yuckware removal can be tricky as hell even for an experienced yuckware hunter. Well meaning but uninformed advice can be dangerous at worst, troublesome at best. I know you want to help, but its best to let the experts do the work.

O.K. now we can clean up:

Download, update and run
CWShredder
Click Fix, don't just scan. Let it fix everything it asks about.

Next download and run the following :

1) SpyBot Search and Destroy
After installing SpyBot Search & Destroy, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', have SpyBot remove all the items it marks in red.

2) Ad-Aware
After installing Ad-Aware, and before running the program, first press "check for updates now".
Click "Connect" and install all updated components available. Click 'Finish'.
Press "Scan Now", then 'next', and let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again.
Check all found items, and click 'next' once more.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Always reboot the computer between each program - both of these may find things that they need to have a reboot of the machine to clear - please reboot and let them finish.

Reboot, then post another log and let us know how things are running.

I have already suggested CWShredder and my opinion was dismissed by more knowledgable people. Could it be that I was right after all?

If you read the posts above you will see.

Now that that was done it should work, at the time you were recommending it it would not have.

You're almost there now, how are things running? Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Move HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Please delete the old copy so it can't be used.

Restart HijackThis and put checks next to the following, close all browser windows (including this one) then click on 'Fix Checked':

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCDRealtime] C:\WINDOWS\realtime.exe

Find then delete C:\WINDOWS\realtime.exe <-------- Delete this file.

Go to Windows Update and scan then download ALL of the critical updates.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:
SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

More info and download is available at:
IE/Spyad: http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

Good job, nirvana. I use JavaCool's SpywareGuard/SpywareBlaster myself, along with a custom "Includes" list for SpywareBlaster. In conjunction with Spybot S&D's "Immunize" feature SpywareBlaster is extremely effective, IMO, and gets a personal "Thumbs Up".

I'd mention too, some thoughts about Eric Howe's excellent IE-SpyAd:

1) With older, slower-processor/smaller memory machines, IE-SpyAd can cause some performance issues. That's getting to be less and less a concern; a PIII or equivalent or above, running at 500MHz or faster, with a minimum of 128 KB of PC100 or faster memory should notice little if any impact in most environments.

2) Win XP users should download IE-SpyAd to a folder of its own, then right-click the .zip file, and select "Extract All", then install IE-SpyAd from the resulting new folder. When installing IE SpyAd, it is a good idea regardless of operating system to temporarily disable any existing security/privacy software which might be running, especially any which tracks the registry, remembering to re-enable it once the application has successfully been installed.

3) If using IE-SpyAd, be sure to set the security options under the "Restricted Sites" list in Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options to "High". It should be noted too that the application includes a separate installation file for exclusively Adult sites, which must be installed if one wishes to exclude those as well.

4) IE-SpyAd is updated every few weeks. Users should check the IE-SpyAd webpage at least monthly to ensure they have the current version. Prior to installing the updated version, removal of the older version is necessary, but no biggie; just use the application's built-in uninstall routine, as detailed in the "ReadMe" file, reboot, then install the newer version.

Thank you, Nirvana
I appreciate.
By the way, what is realtime.exe for?

realtime.exe is part of PCDoctor, a program I don't think too highly of, but then that's just me and a few hundred other folks on privacy and security forums and newsgroups all over the 'net. Unless you've already swallowed their hook and paid for the unlock code, I'd suggest just living without PCDoctor alltogether.
