The Eternal Rhythm

The first drops of rain start falling down, as we lie here, just her and I, listening to the pitter-patter of Nature's shower on the leaf canopy, creating a natural symphony. As I bring my eyes back down to my beloved, I catch a glimpse of spontaneous joy that overwhelms me like a wild conflagration. I was so inundated by the angelic divinity of her presence that all I could perceive was her, standing out like a radiating angel in utter darkness.

With the fresh smell of the spring rain engulfing us, we stand up and dance, and as the rain falls, we dance faster, ours hearts beating to the rhythm of the rain. We dance past the singing trees, past the musical ferns, to the sparkling blue lagoon. Suddenly, the sun peers down from its cloudy retreat, and a beautiful rainbow emerges. We cease to dance and dive into the water, racing to the middle, where our mortal parts caressingly cradle each other, while our souls intertwine

Our hearts stop beating to the rhythm of the rain, and now the rain no longer matters, the shimmering lagoon is invisible to us, and the amorous rainbow is insignificant. Our surroundings blur as if we are the only two people alive through our heart's eye, and everything else is merely a lie. As our bodies draw closer together, our hearts begin beating to a new rhythm, the rhythm of love.

In a single pulse of the heart, everything changed. As long as we had each other, we were in a state of ecstasy. No worldly pleasure could compare, for our avarice is impaired by our undying love for each other. We would follow each other to the ends of the earth, and beyond, even to the fiery pits of hell.

Alas, the rain lets up, and we swim back to the beach. Lying down in the sand, we cuddle up together as the setting sun fills the sky with a breathtaking sunset: Nature's tribute to eternal love. While this tribute was of exquisite quality, I couldn't take my eyes off of her, for she was the sum of all my dreams endowed into a single entity, of which I hold so dear. I hold her in my arms like a wise man holds a diamond: delicately, caressingly, and admiringly. My very essence jumps as I feel her tender heart beating softly against my chest.

As nightfall approaches, I realize that all my dreams had come true. Her loving eyes give me a plethora of wealth as I partake of her golden soul through those crystalline wonders. Her lungs give me eternal life, like the ambrosia of the Greek gods, every time we kissed. Her compassionate heart gives me more love than I could imagine in a thousand lifetimes. The stars begin to fill the sky as we walk back to our humble home, hand-in-hand.

That night as I laid by her side, I thanked God for everything he had done in my life, good and bad, that had led up to this most extraordinary day. For the first time in my life, I truly believed everything he did had a purpose in it, even if I didn't see it at first. I silently let tears of joy, tears of happiness, slide down my countenance as I watch my sleeping beauty - both inside and out - asleep in my arms. I had found my mermaid in the sea of love, and I know in my heart that she is the only one for me. The sea may be full of fish, but there's only one mermaid that God created just for me, my soul mate. Over time on the island, the rhythm of rain would come and go, but the rhythm of love would sound continually and true.
