this always cracks me up
my parents came to Canada from Germany and pretty quickly adapted to the North American distance between people so I didn't know about it til we visited family in Germany
quite recently, I was at a lecture given by a darling young professor from Germany. Our dance troupe performed at the event and afterward he came to speak to me ... and got closer ... and I stepped back ... and he stepped closer ... and I stepped back ... til we'd gone around almost the entire lecture hall. Friends of mine started laughing when I passed them, moving backwards, while they were at the buffet.
