My machine has 256MB RAM with a max capacity for 512MB. Would it be better to install another 256 card or remove my old 256 card and install a 512MB card? They are made by my machine manufacturer and suggested as upgrades. Basically my question is run 2 256MB cards or 1 512MB card? I didn't know if it would make a difference to the machine.
If the machine maxes out at 512MB then it probably will only accept 256MB cards. Are you sure you have a 256MB DIMM/SIMM or might you have two 128MB modules? You see where I'm going. I'm guessing the machine has only two memory slots. There would be no noticable difference in performance using two 256MB modules vs. a single 512MB module. Plus it's cheaper to buy the 256MB, assuming you already have a single 256MB module.

Thanks cj, It's 256MB 1 card and a slot for another. I was wondering about running a new card with a 3 year old one. For the price of 2 new 256"s I can get a 512 card. See where I'm going?I don't know if this would cause problems or not,1 old 1 new. Or how long before I need to replace the old one. So I figured if it would work it would be cheaper in the long run to get the 512 card. Make any sense at all?
It may be "cheaper in the long run" but I doubt the motherboard will accept the higher density card. If the manual clearly states a maximum of 512MB, it also expects both slots to be filled.

Thanks again. I did some questions with Crucial.com and one guy said stuff it with 2000MB. So I watch who I listen to. You say it's best to get another 256 card and put it in slot 2 and all will be well. Sounds like good advice to me. I work on cars. They're pretty straightforward. Not like this stuff.
