Science Help - Welding: Technical Research Project Topic

Hello, I am currently on the hunt for a topic to research for a welding technology technical research project.

I have a year to complete the project. A Technical Research project is much like a PhD thesis. The purpose is to explore a facet of welding that will improve upon currently existing technology. Some ideas that have been explored in the past are ultrasonic testing on anisotropic materials such as stainless steels.

Does anyone have good ideas for this? All ideas are much appreciated

Thank you,

Cheers

@RealEyes,
Is the choice of inert gases and inert gas welding a large enough topic?

Ultrasonic testing expanded to all forms of NDT might work. Might even include such destructive testing as examination of welding coupons.

@roger,
It can range in a broad topic like the GMAW but has to deal with a specific element of a process that I can do research and development on, basically. An example that has been done for inert gas welding is adding a fluoride mixture into the Ar-CO2 gas to help remove hydrogen from the welds (to avoid hydrogen induced cold cracking).

Keep the brainstorm going! Thanks roger
