stinkin pop ups

How do I get rid of pop ups on my XP? I ran Norton AV and it found five files--a.exe, alchem.exe (in 2 places), downloadPlus.exe, and twaintec.dll

Norton was "unable to delete" these files. Now what? When I search for these files to try to delete them, I can't find them...

What do I do?

Thanks in advance.

Hi sleen, Welcome to A2K. What you can do is to do a RESTORE by going to PROGRAMS, then to ACCESSORIES, then to SYSTEM TOOLS, then to SYSTEM RESTORE. Use a date about a week before you started having the problem. Good luck!
After you finish this process, don't open any email you don't recognize; delete them or have them screened for a virus first. Don't give out your email address to business links.

sleen2004- Welcome to A2K! Very Happy

I use the Google toolbar to stop pop-ups. It controls them beautifully. I left in the "pop" sound whenever it stops a pop-up, 'cause I enjoy hearing it. So far, in a few months, Google has stopped 1985 pop-ups!

Guys, the problem will not be solved with regular popup blockers as this is a local exploit he has.

sleen2004,

Have you run spybot and adaware?

...local exploit means...what?

I have not run the programs you mentioned.
This site www.ad-aware.com was recommended to me since I last posted, but I haven't tried it yet.

Want to get input from you all b4 doing anything else!
Edited to ad: System Restore is not an option, for reasons that wouldn't interest anyone here.

thx.

Local exploit means it's sourced locally. That is on your computer.

Frequently, when someone complains about spyware launching popups they'll get answers recommending a popup blocker, which is completely futile for local spyware.

The goal is to get rid of the infection, not discuss the merits of popup blockers that will neither remove the infection or even block the popups.

That's why I pointed out that it was a local exploit as opposed to popup problems fromvisiting sites that lauch them.

Anywho, you don't need system restore either, that's another suggestion for dealing with spyware that is given sometimes and that should also be ignored. I have yet to see a single instance in which it was necessary to use system restore to remove spyware.

Ad-aware is a decent program. Run that and spybot and then post a hijackthis log and we will help ya get rid of your infection.

If you need help aquiring, installing or running those programs let us know and we will help.

PS, don't use hijack this to fix anything till you get recommendations of what to fix with it as it will list critical system stuff too.

Actually, disabling System Restore, thereby deleting all previous restore points, is good practice when attempting to remove any sort of yuckware ... virii, worms, trojans, adware, or spyware. Its also important to make sure any and all files and folders in all user profiles are scanned and cleaned ... yuckware can hide itself anywhere. If you don't get rid of all the files that allow it to protect and/or regenerate itself, you're simply wasting time and effort.

Me too
I have recently scanned and found 5 trojans and worm virii. I have a google pop up blocker and it was working terriffic. Now it only blocks some of the pop ups. This whole thing started when I upgraded my AIM messenger, which installed a tool bar, and a weather bug, and added several porn folders with links to my favorites. I upgraded my Norton AV and updated the definitions and ran through the usual virus removal process. I was unable to delete the files and settled on quarantining them. I admit I may now only get a few less pop ups than prior but I still get them at an alarming rate. Very similar to the original posting here. Question is: how do I delete quarantined files.... and/or how do I stop these F$%#ing pop-ups?!?!?!
