late 80's mid 90's fim boy get's left alone in house catches thief becomes friends

i am after the film where a kid is alone at home all security in house catches burglar in house then forces him to to take ransom etc very funny in the end they get close etc. and he saves him from something can't remember . in the end he and the child are friends and ends up living in with the family pool house etc
