Precognition in a deterministic universe

One objection - what if a precognized event is described in detail:

(Hypotethical:) The psychic tells me I will write a paper on relativity in 10 years- what then if he gains full access to that paper, and already tell me now what I will write?Smile

He must be stopped from telling me how I solve or write it, since the event is already in stone, and that event is in 10 years, not this year.

But in theory there should be no limitations on what to precognize, if precognition is real.

No rigorous demonstration of precognition has ever been made. You have not provided one.

The Bible pokes fun at people who consult mediums with the tale of King Saul who consults the witch of Endor to ask if he'll win tomorrows battle.
She contacts dead prophet Samuel who tells Saul "You and your sons will be killed and your army overthrown"(1 Sam ch 28)

Hearing this, Saul is reduced to quivering jelly, and of course he's in no fit state to command his troops next day, and he and his sons are killed and his army overthrown.
In other words trying to see the future is completely pointless and counter-productive..Smile

Even Shakespeare poked fun at mediums when Macbeth consulted the 3 witches and he realises too late they've led him up the garden path to his doom-
"And be these juggling fiends no more believed, that palter with us in a double sense"..

@Romeo Fabulini,
More than poking fun, Romeo. It is roundly condemned. Do you need citations?

@neologist,
There, I try to keep it light to avoid posting too many Bible verses in Spacetimes thread, but you force me into it!-
Okay here goes-
"Let the astrologers try to save you,the fire will burn them" (Isa 47:13/14)
"Don't worship the sun moon and stars" (Deut 4:19)
"Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God." (Lev 19:31)
God says:-"I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists" (Lev 20:6)
"Saul expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land." (1 Sam 28:3)
"Josiah got rid of the mediums and spiritists and idols and all the other abominations." (2 Kings 23:24)
"He stargazed and used spells and witchcraft,and spoke to demons and wizards,he did much evil in the sight of the Lord" (2 Chron 33:6)
"When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?" (Isaiah 8:19)

MEDIUM - "Is there anybody there?"
VOICE - "Yes, this is Albert"
ALBERT'S WIDOW - "Oh Albert, what divine messages do you bring from the other side?"
ALBERT - "Watch the milkman, he's on the fiddle,
Buy your fish fingers at Tesco they're cheaper there,
And be careful walking home down Saxby Street tonight, the dog at number 17 has done a heap in the middle of the pavement again"..

PS- I once wrote to Stephen Hawking for a joke saying I'd heard he was an astrologer, and could he please tell me what the stars and planets foretell for me, for example will I be lucky in love?
He wrote back saying simply-
"Dear sir,
All I know about the stars and planets is that they obey Newton's laws of motion.
Yours sincerely
Stephen Hawking"

No, the same is true of any historical event, documented or otherwise. You werent there.

I don't have to be there. I am skeptical of anything which flies in the face of physics and reality, unless substantial empirical evidence is presented. Since you have presented no such evidence, I conclude that you have been completely duped by a charlitain of some type.

@rosborne979,
What would constitute substanstial evidence, if not continual accuracy with regard to past and future events? How could this man know I am so intelligent, without even speaking to him? He did not speak of intelligence with anybody else.

He only commited ONE error, and that was in reference to my girlfriend - he asked me not to leave her, and this was the final thing he wanted to tell me. I don't have one, as of yet. In any event, I did not reply to his request, but he asked for confirmation before calling it quits.

He understood and described me far better than any friend of mine, and I have had the same friends since I was 15 years old.

Both.
We all find mediums and assorted pagan heathen practices and beliefs to be absurd and laughable ..Wink
For example God calls pagan idols "scarecrows"-
"For the customs of the people are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold, they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak,they must be carried because they cannot walk.
Do not fear them, they can do no harm ,nor can they do any good." (Jeremiah 10:3)

@spacetime89,
It's a classic scam. There are thousands of examples of how it's done. Have you looked at the data skeptically?

@rosborne979,
Yes. Me having an interest in the paranormal, specifically cold reading. But I was not subject to any form of guessing game. I was well prepared for it.

Incidentally a few years ago I took part in an online ESP test under my other name 'Waymarker' but could only score 60% which was only just above average.
5 face-down cards kept being flashed onto the screen and I had to keep guessing which one was the picture of a cavalier or whatever-

I meant guessing game from the psychic, to extract information. Some of the charlatans, such as the late Sylvia Browne are very amusing entertainers.

The problem is not with PREcognition, it's with POSTcognition, the way we falsify past events to suit our interests. This is ideological reconstruction, something which historiography is designed to oppose.

I am glad for that. At my advanced age memory is something to treasure. But what does that have to do with this thread?

@JLNobody,
I have recalled the events accurately, and can quote them directly. There is no false memory. But sceptics will say anything.
