Brush Location in DC Machines Why ?

My query is very basic in regards to the DC Machine, I will be very thankful to you if you can clear this doubt.

Why is it that in DC machines the brushes are located in the quadrature axis (neutral region) What will happen if the brushes are connected in the direct axis directly under the influence of the field pole.
