I understand that the ancient Greeks once had discussion on the topic, but I failed to find any reference leading me to the discussion. Could someone help me?

Or, is there any similar discussion occurred in the past?

@Citizen Peng,
for society to function. the ancient greeks started the debate. The two schools of thought were: (1) intention is what matters or (2) consequences are what matters. that's about all I know on the subject!
take a look at this:

@Citizen Peng,
Google "social contract", a concept proposed by Rousseau.
Also, "enlightened self interest"
These quests should give you a variety of thoughts from a number of individuals.
