Oh, you would be able to do this a lot faster and more easily with MS Access.
But you can potentially do this with a pivot table. You would need to select the entire data area you wanted to pivot on, have it create the pivot pane (it's a blank that you will click and drag the data elements to) on a separate sheet and then drag the data elements you want to count to the left to place them into a vertical column and then select Count as what needs to be calculated.
I am not explaining this well so you would likely do best to go to the Microsoft website and start clicking around Help for pivot tables.
