I am not having a good day. My new laptop keeps coming up with this darn message. When I got a new computer last fall, I was battleing the same thing the fourth day I had it, and ended up reinstalling EVERYTHING that I'd spent 3 days installing. Is this what I'm going to have to do this time. I think I'm dealing with Blasterworm maybe, but I'm not computer literate enough to know. I know last time I went back to the retailer and got a "patch" then reloaded everything. What do you suggest now? Doesn't Norton protect against this ****?
I'm also having trouble with my regular computer constantly shutting down the internet connection often seconds after I've connected. The toolbar still reflects that it's active, but I can tell by my phoneline indicator that it isn't. I'm assuming that it's in the computer, because I run the laptop on the same line and have never had this problem with it. Do you know where the problem might lie in my computer, and how I can fix it?
Thanks
ldobbin,
Welcome to A2K!
Here you can find
Blasterworm removal instructions. Let us know if you have any problems with it. On that thread you can also find ways to protect yourself against it.
As to the internet connection problem that could be a wide variety of things and we'd need more information to help you. It could just be a lousy ISP.
ldobbin,
What you have might be a newer virus than the one I gave you removal instructions for.
Some of the instructions would have helped (e.g. the stinger program) but the following instructions might be more pertinent.

Hi Craven,
Thanks for the help you're providing. I went throught the sequences you suggested today, but something's still not right. I did find that the computer was not shutting down on me IF I stayed off the internet. I was able to accomplish a fair bit off line, and thought I had the problem licked, but as soon as I logged on again up came that blasted window. I'll try your latest suggestion tomorrow. Thanks a bunch for your help
As of 5/2/04, Stinger will remove the two currently identified variants of the Sasser worm, all of the major AntiVirus applications have been updated to cope with it, and several AntiVirus vendors have specific removal tools on their websites.
It affects only Win2K/WinXP machines, and this outbreak is as good a recommendation for using a firewall, and for keeping up with antivirus reference file and Microsoft Security Updates as can be imagined. The patch which prevents the Lsass exploit has been a "Critical Update" at Windows Updates for weeks.
