Degas painted this work for the 1879 exhibition in egg tempera. Unlike oil paint, egg tempera - pigment mixed with egg yolk - dries to a matte appearance. His use of tempera exemplifies Degas' experimental approach to art.

Thousands of performers dance in unity at the Arirang Mass Games in Pyongyang, North Korea. In the background, schoolchildren hold coloured booklets to create each “pixel” of the nation’s flag. The two-month-long festival depicts the story of North Korea through gymnastic and artistic expression.
