@vonny,
What I remember about Avila is quite different from your picture. I'll try to dig up mine to post.

The Blarney Stone....

For those of you who haven't done it, the Blarney Stone is basically the bottom part of the darkened area on the outside wall.
To get your smackerooneys onto it, you have to lie backwards over the gap, hold onto the upright metal rails and shuffle yourself into position.

Oh, and it tastes of salt, because it's all washed down with saline solution on regular occasions.
Whether it works or not is open to conjecture. All I can say is that since I snogged it, I have noticed no real change and remain as shy, coy and reserved as I always was.

@Lordyaswas,
Being shy, coy and reserved might be part of your charm, so it is good you did not change.

@saab,
That is so lovely.
Looks like it would need routine maintenance, but worth it.

@Lordyaswas,
I thought the blarney stone was at ground level, and one had to bend over a well to "kiss" it. Mr. Green

@cicerone imposter,
No, 'fraid not, CI.

It's right at the top and is just where the occupants used to chuck boiling water, oil, rocks, tar, toilet waste and anything else they could find, over attackers trying to scale the walls.

What a place though, so much to see and do around the Cork and Cobh area. If you're ever heading that way CI, give us a shout and I can get you in to a good Poteen party that's guaranteed to cure jet lag and make you walk as if your flip flops are on backwards.

@Lordyaswas,
I visited Ireland in 1998, and my memory has failed me! I've been looking at travel companies for another visit to Ireland, because I was ill with the shingles when we were in Dublin (during the whole tour), and wish to return to see it "for the first time."

Maybe, that was the cause of my memory lapse; had shingles during the whole tour from London up to Scotland, into Ireland, and back to London. Good thing for me, there was a young doctor from Singapore who fed me pain killers throughout the tour, and was able to see and do about 75% of the tour.

Took the doctor and his wife for dinner at Saint Julien's in Singapore on my second visit to that country. The first time I was there, they took me to their beautiful home for dinner, even though they were supposed to be my guests.

This is what I remembered.

@cicerone imposter,
Memory lapse? Shingles? I don't believe it for one minute.

C'mon, you can tell me......it was the Poteen, wasn't it.

@Walter Hinteler,
The Roman stone pillar bridge over the Moselle river in Trier, Germany. The arches were added in the 14th century (and the lamp-posts a little bit later Wink )
