Hello! I would like help with solving the crossword clue " a dogs third eyelid". I have read lots and seen photos of the operation for cherry eye but no three letter word for it. Possible letters are HA? Have enjoyed reading comments and answers from other searchers.
It's called the HAW. [Also known as the nictitating membrane, and found in other animals, such as owls and cats, as well.]
Actually, while it does solve your crossword clue, the haw is a gland (glands nictitans) that is found ON the third eyelid (nictitans or nictitating membrane) facing the cornea. This gland produces 30-60% of the tears in dogs and cats and is normally held behind the third eyelid by a small ligament. It is the prolapse of this gland that is called "cherry eye."
The devil is in the details.
Hey, whatever works!
