I 'd say it was Marx , but Im not sure which one of them Id select.
A college student (don't know his name) in a short Readers Digest piece is a hard act to follow.
The philosophy tutor held up a pencil to the class and said- "I want you to write an essay about this pencil, go!"
He gathered in the essays at the end of the lesson and gave top marks to the student whose essay consisted of just two words-
"What pencil?"
@Romeo Fabulini,

Nobody goes there any more, it's too crowded.
It’s like deja vu all over again.

The future ain’t what it used to be.
If you don’t know where you’re going, you might end up some place else.
When you come to a fork in the road, take it.
Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.
The towels were so thick there I could hardly close my suitcase.
And, of course, the classic . . .
It ain’t over till it’s over.

Rosanne Rosanna Danna: "If its not one thing its something else."
@GhostWhisperer,
Edward III:
(There may be others to whom this is attributed.)
My favorite has always been Karl Popper, but not sure he was that "great".
I grew up with Dr. Seuss so my vote goes there
