What is up with all this malware that is floating around these days? I recently had a machine get infected with "updater" and when I tried to use McAffee Virusscan Enterprise to remove it, it also removed one of more the TCP/IP layers (network and/or transport), and left the machine unusable and in need of reinstall.

I run Adaware and Spybot constantly now, along with the anti-virus software.

This is getting really old really quick. Is there anything in the works as far as litigation against the hijackers?

Yes, and interestingly just this week.

Don't expect much. This isn't the type of thing that laws can easily solve.

I don't expect much, but something is better than nothing. It's getting really bad.
