Hi - this seems to be the place to come. I have read other posts regarding the subject but I wanted to check with the experts about what to do exactly. Here is the hijackthis log. Can anyone help? I would appreciate any assistance...

Wilso, I know you are trying to help, but that thread won't help the member much and will only confuse.

Nearly every single solution on that thread is blocked by the hijacker this member has.

Octopus,

If I don't get back to you on this by the end of today please bump it back up.

I'm heading out the door & won't be back to an online 'puter for a while, but if you're gonna include instructions that involve running other programs you can easily circument the hosts-file-based hijacks by just linking to IP based URLs.

Eg. this link should work fine: CWShredder

Right, Monger, that link does work fine...

Ok, Craven, thanks - don't work too hard

It's not a major emergency (is it? Shocked )

I mean, everything else on the computer seems to be fine so far. It's more annoying than anything else.

Cheers,

Ben.

ok
First of all if you have those terrible stuffs in your computer make the follwoing:

Download:
Spybot search & Destroy
Spysweeper
The Cleaner (may be you have infected with a trojan)
Update them and then scan your pc after cleaning those stuffs go to the Host.txt and make it Read Only -- Properties - Read only

that way no spyware will edit your host files...

Octopus, looking over your logfile, some stuff jumps out at me. After running CWShredder as Monger advised, run HiJackThis again to see if anything I've hilighted in red below remains. I've added some comments on some startup items you may wish to consider eliminating, but those aren't critical.

C:\Program Files\SAMSUNG\SENS Keyboard V4 Launcher\SENSKBD.EXE
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe You don't need this; it just checks to see if updates to Sun's Java are available.
C:\Program Files\Thomson\SpeedTouch USB\Dragdiag.exe You don't need this; it just puts a pretty icon for your broadband connection in your system tray.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe You don't need this, at Startup or any other time; it just enables RealPlayer to phone home for updates and "Information of interest to you our valued user"
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe You don't need this at Startup; You can run Quicktime from Programs, or from a shortcut on your desktop or taskbar whenever you want to.
C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe You don't need this, but the way iTunes is set up, it will come back if deleted or re-enable itself if stopped ... not much you can do about it.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe You don't need this, its just a resource hog built into Microsoft Office Applications. Unfortunately, short of uninstalling Office, there isn't much you can do about it.
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe You don't need this at startup, unless you want MSN Messenger to load at boot and be always on. If you don't use MSN Messenger all the time, this can be annoying. To take it out of Startup, go to Start -> Programs -> MS Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts"
C:\Program Files\Sony Corporation\Image Transfer\SonyTray.exe
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger PowerPlus\PowerPlus.exe This is an unsupported Asian Language plugin for MSN Messenger. If you like it, fine. Its been reported as being sorta buggy, and may - not verified - be spyware-related.
C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe
C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe Same thing here as with MSN Messenger -and why would you want both running anyway?
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\HkStart.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winmine.exe Can't figure out why you'd wan't "Minesweeper" to launch at Startup. This entry often indicates the presence of a virus or trojan, though it might also be related to a MicroTek scanner.

Okie dokie
Right. Smile

I've run shredder, smartkiller removal, adaware, and spybot s&d, and here is the updated hijackthis.log. Everything seems to be back to normal. How should a remove the startup items you suggested? With Spybot? Confused

Cool. That's a much better looking log. Glad you found the help you were looking for. Now make sure everything is kept up-to-date and properly configured, and be careful while surfing, reading email, and particularly while file sharing.

To prevent unnescessary programs from launching with Windows, you should first see if there's a configuration setting within that program which would control the launch behavior of the program. The MSCONFIG utility may or may not adequately control a program's launch behavior ... that can be frustrating. A third-party Startup manager, such as the one found in Spybot S&D, often does a better job. Its a good idea to not use both MSCONFIG and a third-party manager to control startups; you're unlikely to hurt anything, but multiple Startup controls can slow booting as they fight it out with one another.

Ack - this coolweb won't go away
Hello - I'm back.

Sorry for the slow response, I've been travelling around a bit. I just can't get the system completely clean. I've tried everything. I deleted files Spybot was saying were malware etc. I keep running Shredder and Adaware. Sometimes they pick up things, sometimes they don't. But after opening up Internet Explorer, it relocates to the "about: blank" page - which is actually a search engine. If I run Shredder it finds searchx, but it keeps reappearing. The whole thing started (I think?!) when suddenly I found a toolbar loaded onto my explorer (isearch). I didn't know what it was or how it got there, so I went to there webpage and uninstalled it. (You may see the uninstaller in the hijackthis log above). I think I have variant 38 or variant 39 or CWS from Merijn's page, but I can't find a dll file that corresponds to the one they mention using PrcView. Now a search window seems to pop up and overload the computer if I try to do something it doesn't like (that didn't happen before).

Sorry for the ramble... any ideas? Hijackthis doesn't seem to be picking up much...

Thank you, computer geniuses.

Ben.

Hijackthis should be able to list anything that might be causing it. Why don't you post a fresh log and we can try to help (I've been busy so someone else may have to help you).
