Cannot find server or DNS error with IE6 over AOL

Reply Fri 23 Apr, 2004 04:16 am
I have an anomoly with IE6 over AOL which though not disastrous is annoying as hell.

One particular website which I used to visit regularly has started returning

"Cannot find server or DNS error"

when I try to access it with IE6. My service provider is AOL (don't laugh) and when I use their own browser I can see the site fine.

Checked my hosts file but thats fine. No obvious signs of hijack or anything, but it's suspicious that it only happens with this particular site.

Any ideas?

Very odd. Have you checked a hijack this log?

When using IE do you have any other problems that might indicate a hijack?

Incidentally, does the site have static or dynamic content? I'm wondering if you are seeing an AOL cache or something.

Please PM me the link and I can tell you if it works for me.

Not cached
I've PM'd the link to craven. The site content has changed today so I know I'm not seeing a cached version in AOL.

BTW please don't bust a gut on this, it's not the end of the world.

I'm just curious!

I saw it, and it is, indeed, working.

Have you tried clearing your IE cache and resetting the settings to default?

Cleared Everything!

Yup!
Cleared the cache, cleared the history, removed all cookies. Reset settings to default.

Everything short of reloading IE from scratch. Which I suppose is the next job.

When I first had AOL way back when, we had a problem with IE (I don't like AOLs browser) but for the life of me I don't remember how I fixed it. (It was four years ago)

I seem to recall that AOL had some kind of block on IE, and it was a pretty simple fix.

Is it just this site, or IE in general? Have you tried uninstalling AOL and reinstalling it?

Sorry, I wish I could remember what I did...

Did you ever manage to fix this I wonder..? I probably think not.

You were lucky that you only got the "Cannot find server or DNS error" only on one website. I've been afflicted by the very same anomaly and I can't access a single webpage. Luckily, I had RealPlayer and used it's embedded browser to download and install Mozilla browser.

I'm upto date with viruses and Hijack This, Adaware etc and regularly run tests on my machine. IE6 just died on me from one click to another and 3 weeks down the line I still can't remedy after tireless hours of trying solutions.

I've installed SP Pack 1 and updated IE6 to the one including search bar. The fix browser facility didnt work and System Restore also didn't help resolve the problem. I've seen websites instructing you to re-register dlls and people who have talked about conflicts with Firewall/ISP settings. None of these solutions have worked for me.

One second it worked, the next not. And no underlying change in my computer configuration caused the apparent misnomer.

It is becoming a well-documented problem on the net yet there are few that offer a conclusive remedy. It is very misunderstood, there isn't enough clarity. Microsoft's own documented piece about it only reveals itself to be applicable to W95/98 after you got to the bottom of a long read.

I've recently set-up MSN Explorer and at first it was fine... Now I can't ever sign in.

orpiment, as you say it wasn't a necessity that you resolve this conflict. It would be nice if you did. It would give me hope. Nothing short of a reformat will sort me out. Sad

Sorry for the essay, first post too! I joined expressly to write that.
