santa and the slippers

Once upon a December night dreary
Laden with packages from a great mall,
Woefully tired, dreadfully weary
I happened upon a child, who was tearfully teary.
Clasped tight in a mittened hand was found
two small nickels, one dime~all of them round.
From her rosy lips, though, passed nary a sound.
At such a forlorn plight, I stopped and inquired
"Why, little one, what on earth is the matter?"

Between little sorrowful sobs, teeth all a chatter
She said, "My dear pa has gotten handsomely fatter.
His tummy like jello, his feet rattle-patter.
and on our wood floors, the cold gets badder and badder!
So I bought him some slippers, cozy and warm,
to keep out the ice when it blows up a storm.
In my pink piggy bank, I saved each tiny bit
But then he got bigger, now the slippers won't fit!
Not being a short man, skinny and thin,
it would be impossible to squeeze
a big toe and four smaller ones in!"

So, perplexed and quite worried, through the stores
we did wander,
being Christmas Eve, we dare not wait any longer~
when, lo and behold, in front of our eyes
was a gigantic Santa, quite double a normal man's size!
It brought glee to my heart, as I heaved a big sigh
for beneath fur edged red pants, size no less than fourteen
were slippers on chubby feet, much the opposite of lean!

He bent and he chuckled with cheeks ever so rosy,
said, "Child it is my job to be very nosy,
so I ask in mutual trust and good cheer
what it is you hold so frightfully dear
on your wishfully wish list this happy, holiday year?

My new little friend said, "O, Santa Look here!
I have my small change and a wish, never fear!
And she whispered and giggled in his hairy, warm ears,
of a dad that was loved who dried up her tears.

Wise Santa being being more than a jolly old man
placed his fuzzy big slippers in a child's tiny hand,
then said, as he closed his elf-stand for the night
"I love going barefoot, it makes quite a sight
my reindeer and me when we travel so light!
Our bags are all packed, 'cause after Christmas' good cheer
we're off to Cancun for the rest of the year,
with sandals, warm beaches and a sun shining bright!
So sugarplum, it's truly
a blessing to make everything right!

A simple kindness is such a treasure to find
so, in joy, this small act of love is sent merrily on
in a wishfully wish of peace for all of mankind!
