Help: better alternatives to MSN?

Hey, everyone:

My MSN Messenger frequently breaks down, doesn't save conversations, and is always coming up with one error or another; I think that I ought to change my IM program. The only problem is that I would need to keep using MSN, as there are many people I know who seldom use their computers and would miss my telling them of an account change. So, does anyone know of a decent replacement for MSN messenger? And, incidentally, does it allow profile pictures?

Thanks.

Try Trillian, it allows you to use all the major IMs in one program.

Jabber is also a popular one.
