I'm disappearing under a veritable shower of welcomes ... thank you so much! Islay by the way is a beautiful little island off the West Coast of Scotland famous for a range of malt whiskies including Islay Mist!
To-day I shall devote myself to a wee tour of the many areas of this group,
Yours aye,
I.M.

Welcome all!

Could Islay Mist or kitchenpete please tell me the meaning of "nil by mouth?" I know of the movie, but just saw the term in a book (Swift,Last Orders).

Nil means nothing. It's used as a medical instruction - nothing by mouth - meaning no food or liquid - usually before a test or surgery.

I knew nil, but couldn't figure out the phrase as a whole. Come to think of it, the term was used in a medical setting (in the book). Thanks.

LarryBS - I come from a medical family and I can confirm that "Nil by Mouth" is used as the instruction on medical notes and often as a tag on bedsteads of hospital patients awaiting surgery etc., for which they must not have anything in their stomach.

I haven't seen the film of the same name, yet...must find it on DVD.

I heard the movie was very good too. I liked Swift's Waterland (also a movie, Jeremy Irons?), and this book received some rave reviews..

The scene with this phrase in it was in a hospital room, so I don't know what I was thinking, must have been half asleep.
