Notice the cave that the Neanderthal toe was found had different inhabitants at different time. Changing neighborhoods existed back then also.

Human evolution, proven by studies, can be dated as little as three million but as large as about six million years ago. Australopithecus was the first stage of the evolution into humans. They began to walk on two, the Homo Habilis began using tools, Homo Erectus using fire, Gro Magnon with clothing, Neanderthal, modern humans.

Well there's "human history,"and there's "homo sapiens" history. Can make the case "humans" go back 2 million years, but you wouldn't wanna date one of them. Smile Homo sapiens don't go back very far compared to the earliest "humans."
