Virus Problem

I got a virus(trojan horse to be most specific) and it doesn't let me open up microsoft media player and it keeps crashing explorer. I didn't have any of these problems before until the virus. I ran AVG antivirus and it detected and said it healed the virus but it didn't. I ran another antivirus online and it said i didn't have a virus.

If I restore Windows XP Home to my Dell Inspiron 2650 will the virus be gone? Oh yeah the file that's infected is C:\windows\pup.exe on my computer.

Use This Link directly to the download of Stinger. When the download box opens, select "Save", save it to your desktop or better yet to your hard drive. When the download completes, select "Open", and, if necessary, click the red-and-yellow Icon to open Stinger. Once Stinger is open, click the blue "Preferences" button.
In the top lefthand panel, "Scan these targets", the "Processes" box already should be checked. Add a checkmark to the "Boot Sectors" box. Ignore the "Interface" Panel. In righthand panel, "On Virus detection", make sure "Repair" is clicked. In the bottom panel, place a check next to "Scan all files", then click "OK". Click the green "Scan Now" button, and let it run and fix whatever it finds.

Then, See

Doing as recommended in those topics should clear up many of your problems. Once you've gotten things cleaned up as well as possible using the tools provided, we can move on to whatever, if anything, remains.
