Need help understanding HijkackThis log

There are a couple of specific problems: Pop-up ads that appear only after I have exited IE. It doesn't matter what site I exit from, it happens whenever I close the browser. My first AdAware run mentioned a registry key that could not be removed, and when I deleted the removeable files, a second check revealed no problems. Ran CWShredder, but the trojan shuts down the program before it can finish scanning. I think the problem can be fixed manually, but I don't know what to delete from the log. All my programs are fully updated, and there are no viruses. Here's the log:

Hey Cav,

• First, download the CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller removal tool, unzip it then run it.

Here are 3 locations to get the same file (in case you're blocked from one of them):
    - from safer-networking.org - from computercops.biz - from majorgeeks.com
Hopefully that will get rid of the pest preventing you from running CWShredder.

• Next, download CWShredder again, then run it following all its prompts & allowing it to fix everything it finds.

• Now download, install, update then run Spybot, allowing it to fix all it finds.

• Finally, reboot, rescan with HijackThis, then post your new log here.

__________

HijackThis
Spybot
Ad-Aware
CWShredder
SpywareBlaster
Housecall online antivirus scan
Stinger

which program? Spybot, maybe? after taking the other steps in the order I mentioned, just download & install it again, & see if it works then.

Have you tried downloading it from all 3 locations I listed? Have you run Spybot yet? Are you prevented from running that as well?

Here's one more download location:

- from webattack

Yep, tried all three sites, same problem. Spybot is working, and AdAware as well, I have run them both and they show no problems. Very frustrating...I did read somewhere on the CWShredder site that new coolsearch trojans are getting smarter, and are incorporating blockers to several of the programs designed to remove them. Rolling Eyes So, still stuck here.

Would deleting suspicious cookies help?

Yeah, it's very frustrating. Evil bastards, them. Very often it's just a block on particular domains though, which is why I listed several.

And go ahead & delete the cookies, but that won't get rid of this problem.

K well, with no other programs running check off the following & click 'fixed checked':

Reboot then delete:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\frgresd.exe

Post a new log afterwards to make sure you're clean.

Monger, I may have fixed things. I downloaded the latest definition updates for AdAware and ran it. Among the usual crap, I was infected in all sorts of places, including registry keys, registry files and elsewhere with this Winpup32. I found a link:

http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/w/winpup32.asp#Detection%20and%20Removal

I'll try running the other programs a bit later. Thanks!

Always always always update Spybot, Ad-Aware & other such updateable tools before running scans with them & reporting that you've used them. HijackThis is best used as a last resort, as it cannot detect all files & registry entries scattered across your PC which might be related to problems, & there is only so much info it'll turn up.

Glad it seems you've gotten your system back in hunky-dory mode, Cav. Smile

Just a quick note ... HighJackThis, Stinger, CWWWS.Killer and CWShredder are best downloaded into folders set up for them on C:, and unzipped and run from within those folders. Stinger, *Killer, and *Shredder are updated frequently, so its a good idea to download a new copy each time, dump the previous one (after saving any log files), and use the new one. There's a lot of opinion they ( Stinger, *Killer, and *Shredder) work most reliably when run in safemode, which often is the case with yuckwear removal tools; some yuckware loads protection services for itself on normal boot. HighJackThis should be run immediately following a fresh, all-starup-items-enabled normal (not safemode) boot. I most often download stuff like HighJackThis, Stinger, *Killer and *Shredder to floppy or USB flash device, then copy that to a folder made for it on the root drive of an infected machine. That's just me, though, but it works for me.
