July '05 Update: while this topic contains very good tips and instructions, and has aided countless folks in resolving yuckware issues, the evolution of the yuckware problem has brought about a major revision to the removal and prevention process. Go ahead and look it over, for a general idea of what is involved, but please see THIS TOPIC for the current method.

Due to A2K being swamped with requests to identify problems in HijackThis logs, & because the people who try to help are volunteers who do so in their spare time, please try to help out by observing the following instructions:
  • Start a new topic in the Computers forum. Do not post on the end of someone else's thread.
  • The subject line for your topic should be as descriptive as possible (preferably mentioning specific files or websites involved with the problem).
  • Logs should always be accompanied by plain English as to what problems you are actually experiencing.
  • Please also make sure to describe what, if any, steps you've already taken to try to solve it on your own.
Steps you should take before asking for help with HijackThis include the following:
  • Install, UPDATE then run Ad-Aware, Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware & Spybot. Make sure you have the very latest versions, & after installing them make sure to update their definition files before running the scanners.
  • Run CWShredder 2.1.3 (or the latest version).
EDIT: CWShredder is now distributed and supported by Intermute Inc. The link (along with the version number) has been updated, and will direct to the current download page. While a component of an Intermute subscription product, the free, fully-functional standalone version of CWShredder may be downloaded there.
  • Update your virus definition files, then run a virus scan of your system. (If you don't have a virus scanner installed, at least run the latest version of Stinger, which will remove some common baddies.)
  • Make sure you're using the latest version of HijackThis.
Ensuring that all these instructions are followed makes things easier for everyone, & will mean that you're more likely to receive help when you need it. Thanks! Smile

More detailed steps you can take on your own can be found here: Spyware, Browser Hijacks, or other Yuckware? Check here 1st.

One last thing... In the future, please make sure to install any & all critical Windows Updates on a regular basis.
