Modem Problem

Try to connect to server by modem and an error pops up

"Error initializing modem"
I've tried troubleshooting and it didn't work; reinstalling, didn't work; turning off the power source, didn't work; system restore, didn't work
The only thing I can think of is that i was trying to set up a network and might have screwed up some configurations but i didn't go near the modem configurations.
I am running Microsoft XP Professional installed on some type of old Gateway computer. NEED HELP PLEASE.

I had a lot of trouble getting my brand new modem to work with XP. I ended up having to install another driver. I've got a dual boot system (98 and XP) and the modem uses a different driver in each OS. The one with 98 was the from the disk I got with the modem. The one with XP I had to download from a website. I got my XP driver from Driverguide
