You are given two cylindrical iron rods. They appear to be identical but you have been told that one of them is a permanent magnet. Without any fancy equipment how can you tell which is which?

Rod-shape magnets attract only on the ends.

Place them in the shape of a T, if the horizontal rod sticks to the vertical rod, the vertical rod is the magnet. But if the horizontal rod does not stick to the vertical rod, the horizontal rod is the magnet.

Half marks only whim'. Rod magnets do attract along the side, just not as strongly.

What do you mean by fancy equipment? What's considered fancy?

You can use a compass or a wire that is connected to a lightbulb etc. Then you would move the magnet near the iron cylinder rod. If the lightbulb lights then that's the magnet. With the compass you just put it near; if it moves then it's a magnet.

You can do this with many things...

Another way is that you can use a string. You hang the two cylinders and then you observe which one points to the north and which one remains the way you put it

Bites, G'day Cobber. From north of the Mason-Dixon line. It's all apples here mate. Are you from Back O'Burke or Woop Woop? I am not going to bag Adrian, fair dinkum the blokes a bizzo not a drongo.

Although, today he gave the barby a burl but it would not play ball so he had to settle for a damper and dead horse for din-dins, and that's no codswallop. I bet he's still wearing his akubra to keep the mozzies at bay, whilst quaffing a longneck of VB amber nectar.

I would not want to be nearby if he chucked a browneye at the dunny.
Still, no wucken furries, he has had a 90%- 10% mullet. I was holey dooley I can tell you. However, at riddles he's real grouse. Hooroo  Very Happy
