It would be helpful if you could post the complete and exact error message, with all spelling, word grouping, and numeric and/or character strings typed precisely as they appear, including upper/lower case as they apply. Neatness and accuracy count bigtime in troubleshooting.
Now, going on what you've offered so far, I'm gonna guess, absent better information, that you are running Win 2000, and that you meant to type "register.exe" ... that is not a native Windows entry. If related to your printer, I would suspect it was a bit of nagware from the vendor to get you to register the product. My suggestion would be simply to find-and-delete "register.exe" and see what happens. Another thing that caught my attention was your mention of doing a few install/uninstall cycles for that printer. I would suggest you reinstall the printer, then boot into safemode and uninstall it, then, while still in safemode, do a search for all files and folders -in ALL files and folders - including hidden files and folders - which contain the text string "lex*" without the quotes but including the asterisk. Examine each entry Search turns up, and dete any that clearly are Lexmark related ... be sure you delete only Lexmark stuff, and be sure you get it all. Then, empty your Recycle Bin and reboot normally. Do not connect the printer to the computer, and do not use the install disk that came with the printer. Go to Lexmarks' website, find the latest Windows 2000 driver and other specific X73 software, if any is listed. Read and understand all download, installation, and prduct setup instructions and documentation, download everything you need, then follow the installation and setup intructions to the letter, particularly as regards the point in the proceedure you are supposed to connect the printer to the computer. When, probably at the end of the installation process, a "Do you weant to register your product" page comes up, either register it for real or make up a phony name, address, and email, but be sure the printer info, model and serial number, are correct. If you don't provide correct personal info, the worst that can happen is you won't get email notifications from Lexmark about updates or patches for you printer's software and firmware.
