Music and Alzheimer's Disease

There has been much talk about the power of music on Alzheimer's patients. About a year ago a youtube video went viral showing a man in a nursing home who became alert and talkative when an ipod playing Cab Calloway was given to him.
Has anyone had any personal experiences with Alzheimer's and music ?

@acitigal,
My mother and several aunts had it, but of them, the only one I really knew was my mother, and music didn't seem to interest her, before or after.

What 'much talk about music and alzheimer's patients?' cite a link, eh?

I can guess people in early alzheimers can still be moved by music.

@Debacle,
Would you describe that, Debacle? I can't access you tube.
A simple clue will do.

You're not the only one, as few explain their clicks on youtube.

@ossobuco,
osso, the man was completely unresponsive, but became very alert when listening to music. Even after they removed the headphones, he continued alert, answering questions and carrying on a conversation, especially on the subject of music. He even sang his favourite Cab Calloway piece.

@acitigal,
I am involved with a group of people who visit a nursing home and assisted living center weekly
We sing hymns and a few of us who play instruments will also sing oldies

I have seen people who have no awareness of their surroundings and who normally are listless come alive. They are not able to identify themselves or family but know and sing the entire lyrics without fault.
