If humans are cause and effect (stimulus and response) entities, as determinism proclaims, how, why and what do they respond to?

What, whatever appeals or threatens: Anything in past decades or centuries that might have had a bearing on their survival

how do they respond to stimuli - with their body (brain mostly)
why do they respond to stimuli - human brains are built this way with DNA in order to navigate the environment
what do they respond to - all kinds of things in the environment, determined by proximity
