Timberlandko or others,
I was trying to purge yuckware (specifically this websavingsfromebates) from my home PC. I was following the directions from Timberlandko and after I got to teh coolWWWSearch.smartkiller removal tool and the CWSHREDDER my computer crashed.
After reboot, I get numerous messages saying: Windows cannot find sfum.exe This program is needed to open files of type 'application'
After I click cancel about half a dozen times, the desktop comes up. But none of my system tray applications were launched. I try to launch macafee, and I get the same message. When I try to launch ANY application from the application (not a document), I get the same message.
I used my laptop to search the internet and found that sfum is part of some music download page. Microsoft has nothing about it on their site.
What happened? Did the process of removing yuckware delete an important file for windows? Or is there a more sinister yuckware that keeps hijacking me?

Can you boot into safemode?

I can't by using Run-msconfig. I get the same error message about sfum. I can by holding down F8 at boot.
Even in safe mode, I can't launch programs from either the lower toolbar or from the program file on my c-drive. I get the same sfum error message.
Oddly, I can launch a program from a document created with that program.

Unless you're talking about configuring the machine to boot into safemode (generally not a great idea), or to present a boot menu on startup (a good idea, generally, if you do any tinkering), MSCONGIG isn't the way to boot to safemode. One thing you might want to try from safemode though, would be to see if that program is listed as a Startup option, and if so, disable it, then, either way, I'd open the startup folder and drag the program out. I'd also open the program and check to see if its settings can be configured as not to run at startup. All you really need at startup is Explorer and Systray. Its probably best for most folks to leave their security apps startup enabled, and the stuff related to system restore, but everything else that loads at startup is pretty much just along for the ride, consuming memory, processor time, and resources in general. Background apps are mostly slowdown apps. If you find you can then boot normally, you know that program is the source of the problem, and you can make your own decision.
OK then, moving along, not knowing what OS you're using, or just what program is causing the problem ... what I would suggest is one of three things.
1) If your operating system or your backup scheme permits it, restore or roll back to a point prior to the occurrance of the problem. Reboot normally and see of the problem is gone. If so, I'd then find that program and delete it at least untill the yuckware cleanup was finished. I think that is the best option.
2) Attempt to reinstall the program on top of itself either from or a normal boot or safemode. Personally, I don't like that method.
3) Boot into safemode, go to Add/Remove programs, and delete the program Then do a search and find and delete anything of that program left behind. Then empty your recycle bin and reboot normally. Perform a clean install of the troublesome program following the yuckwear removal proceedure. Better, IMO than option 2, but not as good as option 1.
