Buying a Laptop

I'm going into college next year and I need suggestions on what type of laptop I should buy. I'd prefer a PC but I'm open to mac recommendations as well. I'm not really sure what features I'll need, I just want something that I can write and store lots of documents on, play DVD's, and access the internet without having to recharge every 1/2 hour. Any input on this would be helpful. Thanks!
