Beyond tribalism; How well does your religious label serve you?

@MattDavis,
It is hardly a slight disagreement to suggest that someone habitually "doesn't get it." It was not in the least fair-minded, either, given that he failed so see my point, or to ask me why i was writing what i had.

To me Setanta is not an honest person and play games instead of dealing with an issue in an honest manner with insults thrown in for good measure.

@JPB,
Thank you very much JPB for sharing your experiences.
I too have experienced the conflicting desire to "fit in" with a particular religious culture, and to not exclude other people.

Our community was very much divided along the lines of "us" and "them" amongst the jews and christians. I chose not to participate in either group.

How difficult is it to "stand alone" without the backing of a religion, in our society(ies)?

BillRM, you aren't helping your cause here either, by returning any insults.

@Setanta,
I agree that asking for clarification is something we should all probably do, if we are unsure of something as it is explained.

Stating he is not being honest in his dealings on this website is my opinion of his actions and his words not an insult such as calling someone an idiot or a fool or whatever............

No atheists are not identical any more than theists. Facile? I will work on that. But I won't be your target.

Do you find value in labeling yourself with your religious beliefs/non-beliefs?

I probably would if there was a label for my religion, but there isn't. And since mine is just a minimalistic, two-tenet religion, it rarely wastes much of my time to just spell out the tenets explicitly:

Tenet #1: It's bad to cause misery, good to cause happiness.

Tenet #2: Don't believe everything people tell you. Instead, believe each thing in proportion to the evidence for it.

Some day, maybe someone will invent a label for my religion. I'll use the label if and when that happens. (How about "happies"? I like the similarity to "hippies".) In the meantime, though, the full extent of my religion is just 30 words, so why hold my breath?

@BillRM,
I of course agree that calling someone a "fool" or "idiot" is not commendable.
I do think that saying someone is "not an honest person" is equivalent to "liar".
I have been foolish, I have been idiotic, I have lied.
I am not a fool, I am not an idiot, I am not a liar.
Those labels don't define me, those labels would also make it more difficult for me to become more virtuous.

@Thomas,
I've tried defending that "religion" before.
You would be amazed at the resistance to it.

@Setanta,
Set, While you determine my merits or lack thereof, I do have a comment. I think I only said 'you don't get it' once, not habitually and that pales to your personal attacks. Like I said, I'd really rather not participate as I think this the kind of interaction you get pleasure from.

I offer this video because every thread - and I mean all of them - needs a soundtrack.

@jespah,
Thanks Jespah.
Very fitting. I love REM.
The Eponymous album was somewhat my soundtrack when I was 16 going through one of my existential crises.

If that were true, the proper label on my religion would be "contradiction" or "error". Both are useful labels if accurate. I don't agree that they are, but that's besides the point of this thread, which is labelling.

@maxdancona,
Thomas might have just as easily postulated "compassion" and "reasoning ability" as axioms.
Not all "religions" have the same legalistic trappings to which you may be accustomed (including some Christian ones).

But you are an idiot BillRM.

Above you demonstrate your simplistic reasoning. Setanta states that those who believe science will solve everything, are as tied to blind faith as a tub thumping evangelical. You counter with the notion that he seeks solace in believing in an indecipherable universe. To be fair, that's the only answer you could have given because you don't understand what he was saying.

You, in your two dimensional level of thinking, thinks concept of science being incapable of fully explaining the universe automatically means a belief in the supernatural. That's the beginning and end of your reasoning, and in your ignorance you think you're being so clever. You really are deluded.

Maybe the universe is so complicated that it can only be understood by beings a lot more, and in your case considerably more, intelligent than us. Let's say we build a supercomputer that can understand the universe, if we accept its findings we'd have to do on trust.

In short science is limited by our own understanding, not that I'd expect you to get any of it. You've always looked for easy answers.

And you're a ******* nonce.

@izzythepush,
I'm sure that response will prove less than helpful to BillRM, primarily due to it's insulting tone.

As an FYI, that situation is an impossibility (at least so long as by computer you mean Turing Machine).
This Laplace's demon type situation was disproven by computation/number theory in 2008 by David Wolpert.
Such a computer is impossible (at least within the universe which we reside in).

@IRFRANK,
I have launched very few "attacks" at you. Your memory is conveniently vague. You wrote: "Set doesn't get it, as usual." The implication of that is that i habitually "don't get it." Do you "get it" now? It is because of the snide, snotty character of that remark that i largely ignore you now.

Say you, having gotten your shot in. I'm sure you think i shouldn't be able to respond--how convenient for you.
