I have Win2000 Pro with IE 6.0 on my workstation. The problem I have is that my Internet Explorer doesn't have Outlook Express, or any other prg, set up as my email program. - Tools / Internet Options / Programs - The 'Mail' drop down is empty. When I click on an email link on web page, Outlook Express does not pop up. My IT person said to re-install IE 6. I did this - over the top of the old - it didn't help.
I hesitate to uninstall Internet Explorer / Outlook Express, because I don't want to loose my old emails, contacts, favorites, etc.... I know I can backup some of that, but don't think it is worth the hassle for this problem.
Do any of you have an easier fix?
Thanks in advance, craigr
Hi,
Please go to:
Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults
Choose "Custom" then click the arrows to expand the menu.
Under "Choose a default e-mail program" what email clients do you have available?
Please go to:
Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults - DONE
Choose "Custom" then click the arrows to expand the menu. - There isn't a 'Custom' to select. I have two choices under 'Choose a default e-mail program: 1st one - 'Use my default e-mail program' (which is selected) 2nd choice has no writing by it but is selectable.
Under "Choose a default e-mail program" what email clients do you have available? - see above

Hi,
Please go (in Outlook Express) to "Tools".
At the bottom of the "General" tab there should be a section on "Default Messaging Programs".
Do you have that section? And if so,does it say "This application is NOT the default mail handler"? And if so, does it have a button next to it that says "Make Default"?
If so, I'd recommend trying to use it to set OE as the default mail client.
It says that OE is the Default program for both Mail & Email.

It's very odd that it doesn't show up in the control panel then...
IMO, to avoid a resinstall you'd have to do some tricky work in the registry. You can reinstall without losing any data if you backup correctly (lemme know if you need help with that).
If you are comfortable with the registry... Go to start...Run... type regedit
Go to this Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail
See if Outlook Express is one of the subkeys
If it is not there, that is why you are not seeing it as an option in IE.
If you need help on how to create the keys and values, let me know.
Hope this helps.
Don't be afraid of The Registry; just be sure you
BACK IT UP, and know how to restore it, before you wade in. All your working files, drivers, and downloaded applications oughtta be backed up onto something other than your machine, too. Saves lotsa grief. Having an emergency boot disk handy is a good idea, too, just in case something's really screwed up.
I checked the registry and OE is there, though it says 'value not set'.
Is this the problem?
craigr
Yes, that is the problem...
Uhmmm... Moderator... How would I be able to insert a screenshot of the correct subkeys and values to help this person? And thank you for mentioning the backup/restore of the reg...
Craigr
If I can get a screenshot of what should be in there. I can walk you through how to create a key and a value, as there are different values... String, Binary, DWord and such.
Thank you, but I know how to post an image, but what if I don't have a url associated and it is on my hard drive?
It's explained on that thread, and a link is given for one possible place to upload to.

If you need further help let me know.

Oops... Did not read far enough. Just trying to help this person out and I thought that a screenshot and then step by step instructions, would be the best way.
...Failed to add: And thanks for being helpful, opethgirl.

(Fortunately you gave me the opportunity to do so, though.)
