I have an interstate friend, and we want to voice chat because of the relative costs!

He has a Mac and I a PC. We both are using MSN Messenger. Is anyone aware of good software to enable voice chat? It seems to be a problem....

I would think, if both of you are using the currentest (is that a word? No, but it works Mr. Green ) MSN Messenger, its built-in voice chat function oughta work for you, as long as both machines are equipped and configured for it. I dunno ... don't use it myself. Mrs Timber does, and if she can get it to work, anybody can Rolling Eyes I think she prefers Yahoo! Messenger for voice/video chat, though ... not sure why ... I'll ask her. She never uses anything here but Windows machines, but I'm pretty sure some of her freinds are on Macs. I'll try to find out for ya.

Thanks Timber. It seems to be causing him inordinate amounts of trouble - I know I still get a message saying his system isn't set up for voice when I invite him - sigh.

Mebbe go to Yahoo......hmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Microsoft is evil!!!! Avoid the evilness at all costs!

I found the following info which is 4 years old.

PC to Mac Chat

Quote:
Q: My friends and I use Yahoo! Messenger to see if one another is online. My friends with PCs chat using text and voice, but voice chat is not included with the Mac version. Is there another real-time chat program that allows both text and voice chat for both a PC and a Mac?

-- Krista from Covina, California

A: There is currently no instant-messenger program that will allow both PC and Mac users to chat in text and voice. Cross-platform development is dependent on budget availability. Often a company will only develop for the lion's share of the market and right now that's PC users. As the popularity of the Mac resurges, it is likely that more programs will be developed for cross-platform use. Until then, you will have to work around the problem.

A work-around solution to your problem is to use iVisit. This is an Internet multi-party video, audio, and text-based chat service that is compatible with both the PC and Mac. Download iVisit. It requires no additional hardware to install and it's free.

Continue to use Yahoo! Messenger to see when your friends are online, and invite them to meet you in an iVisit conferencing room. You simply need their IP address. You could also use the messenger for text-based chat and use iVisit for audio (and video) chat.

Deb, try Yahoo Messenger. I much prefer MSN Messenger (when it works)to Yahoo, but what you're seeing might be a problem with Messenger itself...at any rate I doubt it has anything to do with trying to connect between a Mac & PC. I've seen MSN Messenger have problems with audio conversations a number of times, while Yahoo Messenger worked fine. The solution might lie with configuring one of you guys' firewalls, but I don't think I personally will be able to give you guidance on what to do in a non-"check these settings & figure it out" kind of way. One thing that might help...before giving up on MSN you should make sure you and your friend are both running the very latest versions of MSN Messenger available, & make sure NOT to use Windows Messenger (which will also be on your start menu if you're running WinXP).

According to Mrs Timber, she uses Yahoo! Messenger for all her voice/video chat ... she says it is easier, so if she thinks its easier, it probably is. She does voice/video chat with a couple folks who use Macs, but she has no idea what models or Operating Systems. I tried it here, and Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger both connected fine between a Windows machine and a Mac, so I dunno what else to tell ya.

Thanks folks - used Yahoo last night. Can get bluddy webcam (as I said above) fine - but no audio!

Friend says the audio wizard - which is supposed to appear in the help menu - isn't there for him.

Is that weird, or not?

Oddly, he is a sound person for tv/film - and has lots of specialist sound software on his computers - hafta wonder if there is some sort of weird software conflict going on...
