I typed in "How do I build my own computer?" into Google and the first page that it came back with was this.

There were a number of other pages that looked like they could give you the lowdown on what you need to know.

Its a web site, a community hangout and a lifestyle around PCs - from artwork to modding to the latest in 3d hardware to troubleshooting from hell. We do charities, LAN events, community activities from BBQs to paintball etc...

There are over a million PC related posting from alot of highly skilled folk and its a real caring and active community.

I have built my 16th PC (custom selected all parts and built at least that many for friends, including networks, video editing gaming rigs etc.) I'm on of the tech heads there with a primrary focus on all things 3d (especially hardware).

So join the forums - say hello in the general section and post away in the tech sections e.g Building and trouble shooting or buying a PC etc and you will get trully excellent advice.
