Well, we're makin' progress. I'm not gonna be able to do much about this for a while today ... got real-world work stuff to do, but I'll try to steal a little time to play with this some more as soon as I can. I think I'll post some screenshots to show you what I'm talking about, and maybe you can do the same. Here's a free screenshot utility.

AnalogX Capture

If you can read its instructions once its downloaded and installed, cool. Otherwise, copy-and-paste 'em into notepad, then, in notepad, up on its toolbar, select Edit, then select "Select All", which should highlight everything. Don't click in the text body, but select "Format" from the toolbar, make sure "Wordwrap" is clicked, then select "Font", and set it for something like Arial Black, with Font Style set to "Bold" and size set to somewhere around 14 or 16 or so and click "OK" ... you should be able to read it pretty well. You'll probably have to manually scroll to the top of the page first, but it should be there, and be big enough to read easily.

LOL ... sorry 'bout that ... Adjust the settings to where you want them, then press and hold down the Ctrl key and hit the A key while Ctrl is pressed, then more or less simultaneously release both keys. Timing isn't important as long as Ctrl is pressed first and held while A is pressed. ... that should equal "Apply". Now, if you could, does your display settings box look like this (apart from the actual settings)?

http://www.able2know.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10156/Display1.jpg

If not, what are the differences ... how many tabs up on top, what are they named, and on the settings page itself, how many buttons are shown? On this one, there are 5 tabs across the top: Themes, Desktop, Screensaver, Appearance, and Settings, which is the open tab. Then there's the Screen Resolution "slider" and on the right there's the "Color Quality" box. Below that are two buttons, "Troubleshoot" and "Advanced", then below them, there are three buttons; "OK", Cancel", and "Apply". Is yours the same, ore are there more, fewer, or different tabs, boxes, and buttons?

I think we're nearly there. OK ... if Ctrl A didn't do it, try this: Bring up Display Settings, set Color (or Colour  ) where you want it. Hit your Tab key ... that should "activate" the slider. Set the slider where you want it. Now, if the bottom of your Display Settings box is the same as mine ... 5 buttons, hitting tab 5 times should select the "Apply" button. Hit Enter. Now, still on your keyboard, hold down Shift, and hit Tab twice, then hit enter. What you're doing there is using the tab key to select the options, the the Enter key to set the option. Lemme know if that worked to get you back to "where you were".

Gee, its gotta be a simple problem, but my not being able to actually see what's going on on your machine is making it difficult to work it out. What is happening is that for some reason, your video adapter and your monitor are not communicating properly. Perhaps the easiest, most expedient thing for you to do would be to contact the Computer Sciences department at a local highschool, and ask if they can loan you a teenager for a few minutes ... give that a shot.

You are a DEAR Man and have tried so hard to help me,you and Monitor,I do understand how difficult it is not being able to see it. I was getting way out of my depth too. Anyway all is well and please don't be cross with me. I decided to do a System Restore (one of the few things I know about ) and I have taken myself back to before all the changes were made. So I am back to where it is manageable again. I will try to find a youngster to help, but they usually want more than my pension. At least I shall always have you to ask a question when anything crops up.Love Gee

Really sorry we weren't able to do better for you. Well, can't win 'em all. Seriously, I would bet there's some sort of community-based senior-oriented free or low-cost computer support available to you. Try asking about it at any Seniors' Organization with which you might be familiar ... is there a local Senior Center or anything like that near you?
